OpenRouter

OpenRouter gives developers one API for accessing and routing requests across hundreds of AI models.

OpenRouter

OpenRouter Introduction

What is OpenRouter?

OpenRouter is a web platform and API that provides a single interface for accessing AI models from multiple providers. Developers can use one API key and an OpenAI-compatible request format to work with models for text, image, video, and audio generation. The platform also includes a browser-based chat interface, model discovery pages, rankings, benchmarks, and provider information.

Its distributed infrastructure can route requests among providers and use fallbacks when a provider is unavailable. Organizations can also apply policies that restrict which models and providers may receive their prompts.

Key Features

  • Unified model API: Applications can access hundreds of models from many providers through one API instead of maintaining a separate connection for each provider.
  • Provider routing and fallbacks: OpenRouter supports automatic routing, preferred provider selection, and fallback options designed to improve model availability.
  • OpenAI-compatible requests: Developers can create an API key and send requests using an interface compatible with the OpenAI API format.
  • Data policy controls: Teams can define model and provider policies so requests are routed only to approved services. Business plans add US and EU in-region routing.
  • Usage management: Activity logs, exports, budgets, spend controls, prompt caching, management API keys, and workspace administration are available depending on the plan.
  • Model research tools: The website provides model browsing, pricing information, rankings, benchmarks, collections, and provider details to support model selection.

Use Cases

  • Build applications that need access to models from several AI providers through one integration.
  • Compare available models, provider pricing, benchmarks, and usage information before selecting a model.
  • Add provider fallback behavior to production AI applications that require higher availability.
  • Control organizational AI spending and restrict requests according to internal data policies.
  • Test models interactively through the web chat before using them through the API.

Pricing

OpenRouter has Free, Standard, Business, and Enterprise plans. The Free plan includes access to more than 25 free models, chat and API access, activity logs, and up to 50 requests per day. Standard is pay-as-you-go with a 5.5% platform fee and access to the broader model and provider catalog. Business is pay-as-you-go with an 8% platform fee and adds features such as advanced notifications, regional routing, and workload identity federation. Enterprise pricing is available by contacting sales and can include fee discounts, custom workspace limits, SSO/SAML, managed policy enforcement, contractual SLAs, and dedicated support.

Who Is It For?

OpenRouter is intended for independent developers, AI application teams, startups, growing organizations, and enterprises that want one integration for multiple model providers. It is particularly relevant to teams that need model choice, centralized billing, routing controls, usage oversight, or provider fallback options.
