What is Amp?
Amp is an AI coding agent and development environment designed for software development on local machines and remote cloud environments called orbs. Each thread can receive a fresh orb containing the project's code, plugins, and tools. The agent can continue working after the developer closes their laptop, and its progress can be accessed through the web, a terminal, or a phone.
Developers can run applications inside an orb, inspect changes, browse files, use a shared terminal, and review a working preview before shipping. Amp also supports collaboration, event-triggered work, and multiple agents running at the same time.
Key Features
- Remote coding agents: Orbs provide isolated remote machines where agents can work without relying on a developer's local computer or creating local worktrees.
- Persistent background work: Agents continue running after the user disconnects and can respond to scheduled tasks, new Linear issues, or CI failures.
- Live application previews: Portals let developers run applications inside an orb and inspect changes with live reloading, without starting a local development server.
- Code review from different devices: Users can review diffs, browse files, edit code, and inspect an agent's output through Amp's remote interface.
- Shared terminal and collaboration: Developers and agents can work in the same terminal session, while team members can share control of the agent, code, and running application.
- Flexible model access: Amp supports connected ChatGPT, Claude, and other subscriptions, as well as bring-your-own API keys and model routing options.
Use Cases
- Assigning bug fixes, feature development, test creation, and performance investigations to remote agents.
- Running several isolated development tasks without managing local ports, worktrees, or cleanup.
- Reviewing application changes and working previews while away from the primary development machine.
- Responding automatically to CI failures, issue tracker events, and scheduled production checks.
- Collaborating with teammates on the same agent session, repository, terminal, and preview.
Pricing
Amp uses a freemium model. The Hobby tier is free and includes all product features, pay-as-you-go access to Amp-hosted orbs, unlimited self-hosted orbs, public and private repositories, and support for external subscriptions or API keys. The Individual Megawatt tier costs $20 per month and includes 45,000 minutes for Amp-hosted orbs, unlimited repositories, and custom domains for portals. Team workspaces have no additional charge, while members can use different individual tiers. Enterprise pricing is custom and adds administrative, security, reporting, infrastructure, and support options.
Who Is It For?
Amp is intended for individual developers and software teams that want AI assistance across implementation, testing, debugging, code review, and deployment workflows. It is particularly relevant to developers who need persistent remote agents, parallel development environments, mobile access to ongoing work, or shared agent sessions for team collaboration.
